Boys and Libraries

Here's where you'll find information in one place about working with boys in your libraries from toddler storytimes to school age programs that have boy appeal. And don't forget the 'Big Boys' of your library - the daddies. Check our Fathersource for ideas.

Why boys?  Articles/Research on why we need to promote reading for boys:

Boys@Your Library

Websites:

  • One of my favorite authors and author websites is Jon Scisczka's Guys Read which is connected to his book Guys Write for Guys Read .
  • Graphic Novel Reporter (bookreporter): Great new website about graphic novels for all ages (kids, adults, teens!) There's a newsletter and you can even subscribe via RSS!
  • Getting Boys to Read: offers great suggestions on how to get boys motivated to read and keep them reading!
  • Reading is for the Boys (and girls!): An excellent webquest created for teachers and librarians on how to encourage boys to read. It offers various statistics and research, some unit plans, booklists, etc for your use!
  • Read Kiddo Read: This website created by author James Patterson, is filled with great book recommendations for young readers, among them awesome picks for boys.
  • Consider offering programs to get kids in the library...your circulation stats are sure to feel the impact.  See this article from School Library Journal and blog from Radon Library Lego club for more information.

Books and Articles:

Workshops:

  • Last year CLP and Beaver County Libraries hosted a multi-district workshop with Michael Sullivan - well known-guru of boys' reading behavior.  It was a fantastic workshop and much of its contents can be found on Michael's website

Blogs for/about Boys:

  • A new-ish blog called Guys Lit Wire is a blog devoted entirely to books for boys of all ages.
  • Here is an awesome one, The Boy's Almanac, about a family going through The American Boy's Handy Book by Daniel Carter Beard, and all that they learn as a result.
  • Blog of Heather Brewer, author of the Chronicles of Vladimir Tod, new vampire series for boys.
  • Start a Book Club 4 Boys!!  Great blog that lays out all you need to know about starting a book club for the boys in your library!

Boys and Gaming (more at the Gaming @ The Library Wiki)

  • This is a link to the gaming pages on David Lee King's blog, but check the rest of the blog out if you have the chance.
  • Games in Libraries: A podcast about games, gaming, and gamers in libraries.
  • Here's a book that supports gaming in the library for all kinds of reasons! Everything Good is Bad for You by Stephen Johnson. It just might surprise you.
