Part One – Announcements (15 minutes)

  • 2017 Professional Development – The PDF of all 2017 professional development will be sent out either by the end of the year or in the beginning of January. Next year, there will be a PAEYC training, more Maker training, as well as a session with the director of The Child’s Place at Brooklyn Public Library and a media mentor training.

  • Children’s Librarian Contact Information – Updated contact sheets for the children’s librarians were distributed at the meeting and are posted on the Wiki.

  • Children’s Choice Awards – This year’s Children’s Choice Awards will be two days since so many schools want to participate. The dates are May 9 and 10. Jack Gantos will be the keynote and a library event is planned for the evening of May 9 at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh Lecture Hall! More details to follow.

  • Maker and STEM Kits – Erin has posted lots of kit information on the wiki. Kits can now be reserved there as well.

  • New Professional Collection Books – More books were added to the professional collection at ACLA, so continue to check there for resources.

Part Two – Romibo Demo, Tess Lojacono (30 minutes)

Tess Lojacono will do a demo of the Romibo robot and present on various opportunities for libraries to host Romibo programs.

  • Reading with Romibo – just one of the many program options, program consists of two books and an activity

  • The use of the robot helps to lengthen attention span for children

  • The cost of a program ranges but on average is $125, grants are available

Part Three – Super Science Kits, Andrea McNeill (30 minutes)

Andrea McNeill will talk about the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh Super Science Kits, which are now available for county libraries to use.

  • 18 kits in a variety of subjects available for request in Sierra, keywords – super science and kits

  • Four of each subject split among CLP regions (Main, Knoxville, East Liberty and West End)

  • Checked out for three weeks

  • Great for use in big or small groups

  • Each kit has a binder with objectives, materials, age appropriate activities and vocabulary

 

Part Four – STEM Presentation, Jamie Collet (15 minutes)

Jamie Collet from Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh-Allegheny is part of the Librarians as STEM Educators program will discuss using the Engineering Design Process in programming and what she has learned in the training.

 

Part Five – Fred Rogers Center Check-Out Tech Kits, Tanya Baronti (60 minutes)

Tanya Baronti will discuss the use of the check-out tech kits with outreach visits and how to reserve them for your library, as well as updates the kits for future use.

  • Will also be available for checkout

  • More kits being added

  • All kits will have 5 iPads
