Each program works best with a maximum of 10-15 participants, with plenty of room for them to safely move around.  Access to electricity (for music) is preferred, but can be adjusted for outdoor locations.  Participants should wear comfortable clothing that they can move around in.  Shoes are generally removed for dance sessions, therefore ground or floor must be cleared of harmful debris.

Basics of Middle Eastern Dance

(ages 9-13) *also available for adult sessions* Session begins with a gentle warmup to loosen the muscles and prepare for the movements involved in Middle Eastern Dance.  There will be a brief discussion on the history and rythms that characterize Middle Eastern Dance.  Then participants will learn some of the basic movements, such as snake arms, and shoulder and hip isolations.  These movements will be put together into a short simple choreography by the end of the session.  One session may last one to one and a half hours.  Multiple sessions are not necessary but allow participants to further practice and build upon what they have learned.

Rates: $150

Dance Me a Story

(ages 8-13) Session begins with a discussion on the basic components of a story – the who, what where, and when, as well as Beginning (exposition), Problem, Action, and End (Resolution). Participants will then warm up with various “character” movements, and learn ways to show conflict and resolution through body language, movement, and facial expressions. Guided in small groups of 3-5 students, participants will be able to conceive simple stories of their own and develop these original tales into dance performances.  Session lasts one and a half to two hours.

Rates: $150

Tales and Dance of Scheherazade

How to Play the Musical Straw

Coaxing music from the blade of a carpenter’s handsaw is a tradition with strong roots from the American folk music of Appalachia to European Impressionist composers. The saw is held between the knees and bent in such a way that specific pitches and melodies can be played either by bowing the blade with a violin bow or striking it with a mallet. The workshop would last 90 minutes and be appropriate for families with children 8 and up. It would include a 20-30 minute “lecture/concert” featuring Buddy Nutt’s traveling exhibit of musical saws and musical saw artifacts from around the world. The rest of the program will consist of  hands-on and playing and practice with mallets and bows with one-on-one wondering instruction from the presenter. The program would conclude with a “Chorus of Saws” and distribution of materials detailing where to find and buy one’s own musical saw and how to make your own bow.

Program would require armless chairs for the participants, two eight foot tables, one hour set-up time and 30 minutes cleanup. If contracted for multiple presentations of this performance I could expand my collection of saws to accommodate more participants.

Library Murals

The class begins with an overview of murals, what they are, how they are created, and examples of murals are shown to the class. Students will have the opportunity to create a mural that will beautify the space, allowing them to give back to their communities in a meaningful and lasting way.  My murals are often cut into unconventional shapes, which open the student’s mind to creating art outside of linear definitions.  Parts of the mural can also be abstract in nature, utilizing outdoor spaces to create art designs that are free and expressive. The mural design would be created on  separate pieces, with each piece being painted by a different library group.  Upon completion, the mural would be reassembled into one united painting that could travel to different library sites for a specific amount of time and/or end up at the ACLA offices.  The project can be painted on tables indoors, or outdoors. Class length is approx. 1 – 2 hours.

Availability: I am available to teach classes on weekdays, and I am flexible to work anytime between 9am and 5pm. An occasional Saturday may be considered.    I am available also for projects outside of the city of Pittsburgh.

Max Participants: 8-10 students, grades 2-6

Maraca Making

Participants of this 1-hour class will be asked to bring a clean recycled container (extras will also be available at the class) with them. This can be any small to medium drink bottle or can, yogurt container, small box, toilet paper tube etc. We will use this container as the head of the maraca/rattle. At their tables children will find the materials necessary to build and decorate their maracas. We will fill it with a variety of small recycled or found objects such as pebbles, rice, sand, buttons, beans, seeds, beads, bottle caps, etc. (each makes a different sound!). A stick will make the handle of the maraca (depending on the type of container used, we will connect the head and handle using glue or wire). The maraca will then be decorated using recycled fabric, paper, glue, glitter, paint, ribbons, buttons, beads, etc. Let the celebration begin! We will shake our maracas in a percussive parade weather permitting. Space needs: tables enough for 25 to work comfortably. Great for 1st -4th grade.

One end of the tube will be covered using recycled fabric or paper and affixed with glue or a rubber band. Then the tube will filled with any number of small (recycled/found) objects such as pebbles, beans, rice, beads, buttons, etc. The other end of the tube will then be sealed as well. We will decorate the rainsticks using, markers, paints, recycled fabric, glue, paper, ribbons, glitter, etc. Let the rainstorm begin! We will create our own “summer storm” right in the library! Participants of this one hour class will be asked to bring a recycled cardboard oatmeal container (extras will be available at the class as well). The children will split into groups . Scissors, glue, and decorating supplies will be found at each table. We will cut off a two to four inch section around the container and cut six to eight openings into this section. Using string or wire, students will attach bottle caps (with pre-drilled center holes) inside the spaces. The tambourines will be decorated using recycled fabric, paper, ribbons, glue, beads, paint, etc. Let the celebration begin! We will parade outside (weather permitting) and shake our tambourines. The children will also be able to play a number of other recycled instruments I will bring (drums, bass, didjeridoo, rainsticks, guitar). Space needs: tables enough for 25 to work comfortably.  Great for 1st -4th grade.

  • I will be sending each child home with a printout of instructions for making other recycled insturments. Some of the projects (drums, didjereedoos) are simple enough to do alone for an older child or a younger child with parental supervision. More challanging recycled instruments like the guitar are projects that an older child may enjoy with a parent's help too. There is no replacement for the joy a child gets from sharing a creative project with a parent! Let's get adults excited about recycling too!

Joy Ike - Musician

The Creative Process of Songwriting

Joy Ike |

A 2-hour class for 5th graders.  The pop culture music that students are currently exposed to is not only demoralizing, but in most cases devoid of creativity. Students will introduce themselves with a 3-4 line descriptive poem. We’ll have a 15-25 minute discussion about the music young people are currently listening to.  We’ll talk about similarities in lyrical content and compare “radio-friendly” songs to avant-garde music that might not readily be accepted on mainstream radio.  Ex: Katy Perry (vey popular) vs. Theresa Andersson (not very popular).  I can submit all music to be used ahead of time if there is concern of lyrical content Children will pair off and share a story of something extraordinary that has happened to them recently. Each child will create a descriptive song based on their partner’s story. Children will be asked to write another short song about a common theme without mentioning any obvious, cliché, or commonly used words or phrases.  Ex: Theme: “Grandma’s Blueberry Pie”.   Off-limit words:  eat, dinner, family, grandma,  dessert, food, bake. Disclaimer: This is not a music composition class, so students should not expect to learn how to compose or write music on an instrument.  However they may bring portable instruments (i.e. guitar, hand drum, tambourine, egg shaker) if they are already well-versed in the instrument and would like to accompany their songs with music or percussive instruments. Space needs: wide space that will allow children to brake off into partners and share stories.

Availability: some restrictions; weekday or Saturday afternoons available

Max Participation: 10-16 students

Rates: $250
